Born in Cape Town in 1984, Bryan grew up on a wine estate 50 km North of the city. An adventurer and lover of wide open spaces, he spent two years sailing from 2002 to 2003 before going on to study at Stellenbosch University from 2004 to 2007 where he graduated with a degree in viticulture and oenology. After harvesting grapes in South Africa and Spain, Bryan made his first wine in 2010 from grapes grown on his father’s estate and on neighbouring properties. He subsequently established his own company: Bryan MacRobert Wines CC.
South African wine: Bryan MacRobert, consultant and wine grower
In 2013, he became a consultant for Hughes Family Wines which produces primarily organic wines from the Swartland region. He then embarked on another project which would take him as far as Rioja (Laventura Bodega y Viñedos SL). He now lives in Logroño, Rioja, and returns to South Africa for the grape harvest, bottling and blending.
South African wine: Bryan MacRobert, talented wine maker
What surprised us most about Bryan though were his Swartland wines. Our first tasting of his bottlings last summer produced outstanding results: 91/100 for his red (Tobias Shiraz, Cinsault, Mourvèdre 2013) and 90/100 for his white Chenin (Tobias Steen 2013). For a first try, it was a master stroke. Age 30, the winemaker puts his heart and soul into his wines and it shows: their drinkability is as infectious as his legendary good humour and boundless enthusiasm. Bravo Bryan!
